LIPS.jpgThe Rocky Horror Show - An outrageous smash hit from Theatre New Brunswick.

Theatre review by Rodrigo Flores

Everyone around you is wearing tight leather with flashy fishnets, and with them is a bag of noisemakers, toilet paper and confetti. Where could you be possibly be? “The Rocky Horror Show”, that’s where! It is Theatre New Brunswick’s latest and most outrageous musical production directed by Leigh Rivenbark with musical direction by Lisa MacDougall and choreography by Phillip Nero.

For anyone not familiar with”The Rocky Horror Show”, it’s an outrageous musical about two regular kids who find themselves at the mercy of Dr.Frank’N’Furter’s “hospitality” after running into car trouble and have no other option but to stay at his castle, where he is about to unveil his latest maniacal experiment.

The Rocky Horror Show” is a show filled with the most energetic, down and dirty rock’n’roll soundtrack to ever grace a musical. The show opened with the musical number “Science Fiction Double Feature”, a tribute to science fiction B-movies, which was sung by the amazing Tania Breen(Usherette/Magenta). Michael Lomenda (Brad Majors) and Dena Chiarcossi (Janet Weiss) then followed up with the sweet and unorthodox love song “Damnit Janet” which you couldn’t help but to smile at, since both Michael and Dena had great chemistry on stage together. But of course the real show stopper of the night was “The Time Warp” performed by Tania Breen, Shawn Henry(Riff Raff) and Sheena Turcotte (Columbia). “The Time Warp” was a crazy musical dance number accompanied by its own dance moves. The show encouraged audience members to participate by jumping to the left, taking a step to the right, bringing their hands on their hips, and bringing their knees in tight. But it was the pelvic thrust that drove everyone insane which led them to doing The Time Warp again!

What made “The Rocky Horror Show” an unbelievable experience was the audience participation. In the show’s program, there was a prop list full of different actions for the audience to do with their props during various moments of the show. For example, when the band played the Wedding March, audience members were to throw their confetti all over The Playhouse. Hardcore fans of “The Rocky Horror Show” shouted out lines after character statements or moments, such as whenever Greg Ellwand (Narrator) spoke to the audience, people would yell “BORING!” or “NECKLINES!”. It was the audience participation that really added an extra layer of enjoyment to the show and really made you feel like you were a part of something incredible.

From the hilarious antics of Tony LePage (Dr.Frank’N’Furter), to the extraordinary talents of Aaron Walpole (Eddie/Dr.Scott), the cast was full of dangerous triple threats that put on a great show, and to compliment them was a beautiful and impressive set designed by Johnny Leroux. Everything about the show was top-notch, from the sound design by Michael Doherty, to the costume designs by Sherry Kinnear.

The Rocky Horror Show” was yet another amazing and entertaining production from Theatre New Brunswick. Be sure to watch out for “Narnia” and “Tuesdays with Morrie” later this season from Theatre New Brunswick, as they are sure to be great shows!

King Of The Stage- Fredericton's music scene takes a leap in the right direction!
Music review by: Kendra Shaw

Fredericton's music scene has reached new heights in the past few months, as local bands have played it out all to win the title of 'King Of The Stage', $5,000 in prize money, and play time on The Fox FM. Nick Zildjian, owner of Nicky Zee's night club, and a Canadian Talent Agency, began this battle-of-the-bands-type contest as a way to open peoples eyes to the talent that our community has. With help from major sponsors, Molson Canadian Rocks, Coors Light, Bacardi Canada and Fredericton's own Fox FM, the 'King Of The Stage' has become a major success. Each week, three bands would compete at Nicky Zee's to win audience and judge's votes. One by one, bands were eliminated until only three bands remained: 'Jesse Cox And The Hooche', 'The Nancies', and Fredericton's own 'She Roars'! The Playhouse hosted the 'King Of The Stage' finals on sSptember 19th where, with a standing ovation, 'She Roars!" won.
